Graduate student Victoria Pérez Rivera and Dr. Sophia Magallanes retrace their mentee-mentor relationship, which started in 2011. They delve into the importance of these connections and talk about how the guidance of others has shaped their work. Victoria shares with her former professor that it was in a classroom discussion about Job that Dr. Magallanes taught "us it was okay to question God."

Sophia Magallanes

Dr. Sophia A. Magallanes is currently an independent scholar who is an Adjunct Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Seminary. She also teaches a course in Spanish at El Centro Latino. Dr. Magallanes served as an Assistant Professor of Theology & Biblical Studies at Life Pacific University for six years. She holds BA and MA degrees in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University; a Masters in Theology from Fuller Seminary; and a PhD in Divinity, with an emphasis in Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament, from the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Magallanes specializes in Hebrew Wisdom Literature and Old Testament studies. She has authored several articles in dictionaries, the Wisdom Commentary Series, peer-reviewed journals, and is currently writing a commentary on the Book of Job.

Victoria Pérez Rivera

Victoria Pérez Rivera is a PhD student at the University of Southern California and an adjunct Bible professor at Latin American Bible Institute College (LABI) College. She obtained her Associates degree from LABI College, Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Vanguard University, and her Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Duke University. Her areas of academic interest include reception history of Pauline literature, ancient Greco-Roman culture, race, ethnicity and gender. She teaches classes such as New Testament, Biblical Exegesis, and Gender Issues in the Church.
