In the present turmoil of political uncertainty, Protestants have taken a central role in the unfolding nature of Brazil’s merging of politics and religion. Dr. Wanderley Pereira Da Rosa’s recent book, Por uma fé encarnada: uma introdução à história do protestantismo no Brasil [Towards an Incarnated Faith: An Introduction to a History of Protestantism in Brazil] (Editora Recriar, 2022), reinterprets the Protestant mission—its historical, theological, and ideological roots—and offers an analysis through the prism of social and political theology without disregarding the plurality of the Protestant world.

In this episode of OP Talks, Dr. Pereira Da Rosa and Dr. João Chaves help situate the current political landscape. O Dr. João Chaves é Professor Assistente de Evangelismo e Missão no Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary e Diretor Associado de Programação na Hispanic Theological Initiative (HTI). Ele é autor de quatro livros, incluindo Migrational Religion: Context and Creativity in the Latinx Diaspora [Religião migratória: contexto e criatividade na diáspora latinx] (Baylor University Press, 2021) e The Global Mission of the Jim Crow South: Southern Baptist Missions and the Shaping of Latin American Evangelicalism [A missão global de Jim Crow South: missões batistas do sul e a formação do evangelicalismo latino-americano] (Mercer University Press, 2022). Dr. João Chaves is Assistant Professor of Evangelism and Mission at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Associate Director for Programming at the Hispanic Theological Initiative (HTI). He holds a PhD in Religion from Baylor University, and has presented and published his research broadly, both in English and in Portuguese. Dr. Chaves is the author of four books, including Migrational Religion: Context and Creativity in the Latinx Diaspora (Baylor University Press, 2021) and The Global Mission of the Jim Crow South: Southern Baptist Missions and the Shaping of Latin American Evangelicalism (Mercer University Press, 2022). His forthcoming book, co-written with Mikeal Parsons, is titled Remembering Antônia Teixeira: A Story if Missions, Violence, and Institutional Hypocrisy (Eerdmans, 2023). He has contributed to numerous book reviews, peer-reviewed articles, and chapters in larger works. His ongoing projects include editing “Christianity, Race, and Ethnicity: Latinx Critical Conversations on Identity Construction and Religious Participation” for Perspectives in Religious Studies (Winter 2022) and co-editing, with T. Laine Scales, the forthcoming book Baptists and the Kingdom of God (Baylor University Press, 2023). Dr. Chaves is also co-editor for the Perspectives on Baptist Identity book series, published by Mercer University Press, and works with the Editorial Board for the HTI Series on Religion and Theology En Conjunto, a book series published by Baylor University Press.

José Manoel da Conceição de São Paulo/SP (1991), licenciado em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (2002), mestre em Teologia pela Faculdades EST de São Leopoldo/RS (2010) e doutor em Teologia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro/RJ (2015). É professor de História do Cristianismo no Bacharelado em Teologia e de Religião, Democracia e Esfera Pública na Pós-Graduação da Faculdade Unida de Vitória, que ajudou a fundar em 1997, exercendo desde então o cargo de Diretor Geral. Seus principais interesses de pesquisa são a teologia social e política da Reforma e a história do Protestantismo no Brasil. Após sua formação em Teologia, ele foi ordenado pastor da Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil (1992). Dr. Wanderley Pereira da Rosa holds a degree in Theology from the Rev. José Manoel da Conceição from São Paulo/SP; a degree in philosophy from the Federal University of Espírito Santo; a Master in Theology from Faculdades EST de São Leopoldo/RS; and a Doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro/RJ. He is professor of History of Christianity in the Bachelor of Theology and of Religion, Democracy, and Public Sphere in post-graduate studies at the Faculdade Unida de Vitória, which he helped found in 1997, serving as General Director since then. His main research interests are the social and political theology of the Reformation and the history of Protestantism in Brazil. After his training, he was ordained pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil (1992).
